Precedent Files

The Office of Judicial Affairs maintains precedent files of Undergraduate Judicial Board cases. Precedent files are narratives of actual previous cases with identifying information of the parties involved removed. These files include a description of the incident, a summary of the testimony given during the hearing, the decision of the Board (along with rationale for its conclusion), and the sanctions issued, if appropriate. Precedent files are located in binders on shelves in 01 Flowers. To access these files, you should seek the assistance of Ms. Sarah Lewis in the Office of Judicial Affairs (684-6938), 107 West Union Building. When possible, please call ahead to arrange a time to review the files. Precedent files date as far back as the 1971-1972 academic year. While the members of the Board are not restricted solely to precedent, these cases give a general idea of potential outcomes for a responsible verdict.

The precedent files should not be removed from the Office of Judicial Affairs at any time, nor should they be photocopied. Accused students and Disciplinary Advisors are welcome to look through the files. It is helpful to look at previous cases involving similar charges to prepare for possible outcomes of a responsible verdict.
